There are various causes and effects of air pollution and as a citizen of India, it’s our duty to reduce those causes and try to create cleaner, fresher and breathable air. But it’s more important to clean and purify the air inside our homes.
We all know the causes of external air pollution like the burning of fossil fuels and release of harmful and toxic gases like CO2, SO2, NO, etc.Some of the causes for indoor air pollution include the continuous release of pollutants from furnishing, electronics, building materials, etc. Sometimes even cleaning, smoking and renovations may release harmful pollutants indoor. Even air fresheners contain potentially harmful chemicals resulting in indoor air pollution.
How are houseplants responsible for improving the indoor air quality?
According to a report published by NASA in the late 80s, houseplants really impact the “sick building syndrome”, a health issue, which is occupied due to inferior air quality. The report was entitled as “Interior Landscape Plants for Indoor Air pollution abatement”.
To conduct the study, NASA used chemicals such as benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde, which found that houseplants are immensely useful in the elimination of toxins in the air and thereby improving the indoor air quality.
How bamboos refine air quality?
There are many houseplants like the Gerbera Daisy, Spider Plant, Peace Lily, Golden Pathos, etc which helps in the refinement of air quality. But bamboo has got some unique quality which can not only purify indoor air but can make the air of an entire city clean.
Bamboos are basically grasses and not trees whose stems don’t get thicker with age. It was evident during the second world war when the nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, bamboos were the only plants which rose from the ashes in just 2 weeks. This indicates their carbon dioxide absorbing capability.
What is the air quality status in Mumbai?
Every year some 3.83 tons of CO2 gas is emitted by an average person in Mumbai which is equivalent to the emissions of a small car making 76 trips from Mumbai to Pune and back. Environmental Management Center in the Dadarcalculated personal carbon footprint of about 503 people in India which is 1.4 tons and concluded that the carbon footprint in Mumbai is double the national footprint across India. Hence it’s high time to resolve this problem.
How can bamboos reduce air pollution in Mumbai?
Since bamboos can grow in tropical regions in India they can easily thrive in Mumbai. These can absorb CO2 and can release O2 into the atmosphere some 3-4 times more than any other tree. Hence, if every individual plant 3-4 bamboo plants then there’ll be no carbon footprint in the next 100 years and Mumbai will be a carbon-neutral city. This is simply because bamboos take as much carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere as we put in.
