Environment and human health are intimately connected

There is an innate, inseparable bond between environment and human health. A clean, pollution free is important for good health. The interactions between human health and the environment are difficult to fathom and of highly complex nature. Ambient air, clean water, sanitation are some of the necessities without which the existence of human beings is beyond question.
In a healthier environment, people are likely to be healthy. Similarly, many health disorders can be connected directly or indirectly to our environment. These are some of the ways in which a healthy environment benefits the health of human beings:

  • Cleaner air for breathing – Polluting the air that we breathe in is directly affecting our health. For cleaner air we need fewer emissions of harmful smoke from cars, buses and industrial processes. This will improve the health of human beings, lessening the chances of asthma, lung diseases, symptoms of allergy.
  • Clean water – For preventing some diseases like indigestion, jaundice, chronic diarrhea clean drinking water is quintessential. Here, by ‘clean’ we mean water that lacks the harmful pollutants. These pollutants include animal and human waste and several harmful chemicals and heavy metals that are not good for human health. The water should also have less quantity of bacteria in it.
Reasonably clean water is also very important for bathing for a healthy body.
  • Air pollution – Air pollution is causing global warming due to ozone depletion. This is a severe threat to human health and if it remains unchecked for a longer time, the chances of health issues go on increasing. Due to ozone hole harmful ultraviolet rays that are penetrating the earth cause skin cancer.
  • This proves that the ways in which we harm the environment come back to us eventually. Our deeds bring sickness and demise into our lives. The understanding that air we breathe is polluted, the food we eat are pesticide-laced acts as the catalyst behind the decision of people to “go green” in the past few years.
A recent study has looked into the details of household contaminants. It has been found out that infants who reside in homes having vinyl floors have more chances of becoming autistic compared to children in other homes. A similar study has revealed that women who use cushions at home are more likely to suffer and have problems while getting pregnant. Shocking as it might seem, polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardents are very common in mattresses, carpet padding and cushions. 97 percent of the human population has visible levels of these chemicals in our blood. Cheaply made drywall manufactured by China is capable of emitting so much sulfur gas that besides corroding electrical wiring, it also invites breathing problems, occasional headaches, bloody noses. The list is unending. However, even after adding all these examples, nothing can beat the amount of harm caused to our health by global warming. Climate change in recent years is going to increase chances of allergies, heart disease, asthma and cancer. The fact that the environment directly affects the human health might make us keen to preserve the environment so that our future generation lives longer.
